The Rakshasa Sea Market

Inspired by Pu Songling’s tale of the same name, “The Rakshasa Sea Market” by Yang Bailiang presents a surreal and haunting vision of a chaotic world. Set against a stormy ocean and dark skies, the painting features grotesque, fantastical figures — some with beastly heads and human bodies, others in tattered clothing or bizarre postures. Symbols of power, fear, and suffering are scattered throughout, creating a nightmarish atmosphere. Amidst the madness stands a lone figure in a white robe, composed and serene, sharply contrasting with the surrounding disorder — a possible symbol of clarity in confusion.
