Sima Qian (145-86 BCE), a distinguished historian of the Western Han Dynasty, is often hailed as the “Father of Chinese Historiography.” He endured immense personal suffering after defending General Li Ling, who had been captured by the Xiongnu. This act angered Emperor Wu, leading to Sima Qian’s forced choice between execution or castration.
